Last night we had a power failure, my first thought was
The kiln??? What's in the Kiln??
Luckily it was just a "design element", basically a pile of powdered glass in reds, oranges and yellow artfully arranged in a layer with hopes that it will fuse into a single piece of wafer thin glass that I can use to add interest to another piece of glass. I call the resulting piece "glass lace" It tends to waffle, very delicate with holes, I do a lot with glass lace. I can get effects with frit (powdered glass) fired in this manner that I can't get with paint or by dumping frit onto a solid piece of glass. It takes advantage of the fact that glass when brought to fusing temps wants to be 1/4" thick, the powdered glass is not thick enough to make that, so it grabs onto itself and creates this effect.
This design element, is meant for a candle holder that I was commissioned to create. I am making 6 pieces for 6 different people. I was given key words, personality traits of each person and tasked with creating a piece for each one. This piece is for the firey guy that has a very calm nature and lots of passion. So First I'm creating the fire element of the piece, later, I'll fuse that design onto some aqua watery colored glass, then form it into a candle holder. I like the water colored glass cradling the fire, I think it captures the personality.
Well back to the power outage, the power was out for hours, the kiln just stopped it's cycle. There was no disaster, just a pile of powdered glass artfully arranged. I restarted the kiln today, please power, stay on...
